AI GxP validation for regulated life sciences
LIMS Validation

LIMS validation for LabWare, LabVantage, STARLIMS and Benchling.

Instrument interfaces, sample lifecycle, chain-of-custody, ELN/LIMS integration — with special attention to data integrity (ALCOA+).

In short

LIMS validation covers sample management, test methods, result entry, specification checking and the certificate of analysis — the path by which a laboratory result becomes a regulated record. Usually a GAMP Category 4 configured product, so the work concentrates on your configured workflows, calculations, instrument interfaces and the electronic signature configuration.

LIMS Validation is delivered by our validation & compliance services practice. Where it saves time, the team uses our products: GxP Copilot for validation lifecycle work and TraceDraft for clinical documentation.

LIMS Validation Scope: Configuration and Instrument Interfaces

Laboratory Information Management System validation is among the most technically demanding GxP validation work because LIMS platforms are both highly configurable and deeply integrated with laboratory instrument networks. The validation scope must cover: the LIMS application configuration (sample lifecycle workflow, specification management, result entry, approval routing, and reporting); the instrument interfaces (bidirectional data transfer between laboratory instruments and the LIMS, including result import accuracy and audit trail completeness); and the LIMS-to-ERP integration where batch disposition information flows from the LIMS to SAP or Oracle for manufacturing decision-making.

For LabWare LIMS — one of the most widely deployed platforms in pharmaceutical QC laboratories — the configuration validation focuses on the LabWare LIMS application module configuration, the LabWare Report Writer outputs, and the instrument interface configurations for HPLC, dissolution, and other analytical instruments. LabWare's test script templates provide a useful baseline, but they do not cover site-specific configuration choices, which must be tested through site-developed OQ test scripts targeting the specific workflows and calculations that the site has configured.

ALCOA+ Data Integrity in LIMS Environments

LIMS systems are primary targets for data integrity inspection because they are where raw analytical data enters the regulated electronic record. ALCOA+ compliance in a LIMS environment requires: attributability (every data entry and modification is linked to an authenticated user); legibility (data is human-readable throughout its retention period); contemporaneity (data is entered at the time of observation, not reconstructed later); originality (the first capture of data is preserved, with subsequent modifications traceable to the original); and accuracy (data is correct and complete, with no unapproved changes between instrument capture and the LIMS record).

The most common ALCOA+ failures in LIMS environments are audit trail gaps (not all data-modifying transactions are captured in the audit trail), instrument interface bypasses (a workflow exists to enter data directly into the LIMS rather than importing it from the instrument, allowing manual data entry that is indistinguishable from instrument-generated data in the audit trail), and backup/recovery gaps (LIMS data can be restored from backup but the restored data is not verifiably identical to the original — a critical ALCOA+ failure for regulatory submissions). Our LIMS validation specifically tests for these failure modes.
